Winter Tires Required Across B.C. This October
October 09 2025,

When Oct. 1 arrives, so does the province’s winter tire season. Across much of B.C., winter tires are mandatory on specific highways until April 30. Some routes without mountain passes or heavy snowfall finish earlier, with requirements ending on March 31.
Which Routes Are Covered
The rules apply to highways through the North and Interior, as well as key South Coast stretches like the Sea to Sky. On Vancouver Island, the Malahat, Highway 4, Highway 14, and Highway 28 are also included. The Lower Mainland and southeastern Vancouver Island are exempt, though changing conditions mean it is still smart to be prepared.
Tire Requirements That Qualify
Approved winter tires must carry the M+S marking, which stands for mud and snow, or the mountain and snowflake symbol. They also need a tread depth of at least 3.5 millimetres. Non-compliance can lead to a $121 fine, making it both safer and more affordable to install the right set of tires early.
Chains and Larger Vehicles
Commercial vehicles face added responsibilities. Beginning Oct. 1, most must carry chains on designated routes, with signs along the highway indicating when to use them. This rule does not apply to the Lower Mainland or most of Vancouver Island, but elsewhere it ensures safer travel during winter storms.
